UK apologises to Ukrainian child refugees and funds new Ukrainian GCSE

Briefing by News4U · First published

The Guardian reports that the UK has apologised to Ukrainian child refugees who were told to study Russian in English schools and announced funding for a new Ukrainian GCSE, to be ready in England in 2028. Schools minister Georgia Gould said she was sorry students were pushed into Russian and that the qualification was developed by AQA with a £340,000 grant from the Department for Education. The move follows lobbying by the Ukrainian government and community groups on behalf of more than 30,000 Ukrainian children who fled to the UK after Russia’s 2022 invasion. [1]
