Discord to make large public server chats searchable on Google
Briefing by News4U · First published
Discord will let search engines index discussions from Discoverable Servers with at least 1,000 members, starting with server web pages on Nov. 16 and individual messages from mid-December, with opt-outs and regional defaults.
Discord is changing its policy so conversations from its largest public communities become discoverable in search engines including Google, Cointelegraph reported. The change applies to Discoverable Servers — communities with at least 1,000 members listed in Discord’s public directory that do not require an invitation to join. [1]
From Nov. 16, every Discoverable Server will have a web page that may include summaries of public channel discussions. From mid-December, individual messages posted in eligible channels may appear in web search, Discord said. Messages posted before the rollout will not be included, and usernames and avatars will be excluded from published messages. [1]
Users can opt out in User Settings under Data & Privacy before mid-December. Discord said the feature will be disabled by default for users in Australia, the EU, the European Economic Area, the UK, Canada, Brazil and South Korea, and teen users will also be excluded. Cointelegraph said Discord reports more than 63,000 discoverable servers; server admins can separately block web presence for channels or entire servers. [1]
