Indonesia president fires chief of staff over alleged wiretapping

Briefing by News4U · First published

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday dismissed chief of staff Listyo Sigit Prabowo, a day after police announced the former national police chief's arrest for allegedly wiretapping phones of high-profile figures, including the president and cabinet ministers, Al Jazeera reported. Spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi said the government views the alleged acts as possibly tending toward treason and endangering state interests and leadership safety. Two other senior police officers were also arrested. The tapping allegedly occurred while Listyo headed the National Police before becoming chief of staff last month; suspects are also accused of ordering deletion of intercepted files. Indonesia's military deployed more than 20,000 soldiers in Jakarta, calling it standard security procedure. [1]
