Democrat Xavier Becerra, the former U.S. health and human services secretary, was elected governor of California on Tuesday, defeating Republican Steve Hilton, The Guardian reported. Becerra, 68, the son of Mexican immigrants, will become the state’s first Latino governor since 1875 in a state where more than 40% of residents are Latino. He told supporters in Sacramento his mission was to “deliver a California we can afford and defend a California we can’t afford to lose,” and campaigned on affordability and resisting President Donald Trump’s agenda. Hilton, a British-born ex-Fox News host endorsed by Trump, had blamed Democratic governance for high taxes and regulation. [1]
