Houston mayor limits police cooperation with ICE after Texas Democratic sweep
Briefing by News4U · First published
Houston Mayor John Whitmire ordered city police to sharply limit cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. People stopped for minor traffic violations will no longer be referred to ICE solely for an administrative immigration warrant; police will contact ICE only when arresting someone for a jailable offence. The order came days after Democrats swept Texas statewide offices and reverses an earlier Whitmire policy adopted under pressure from outgoing Governor Greg Abbott, who had threatened to withdraw about $110m in state public safety grants. Police Chief J Noe Diaz said implementation has already begun. [1]
