US judge orders Trump administration to stop threatening election officials

Briefing by News4U · First published

A federal judge has ordered the US government to stop threatening local and state election officials with criminal charges over processing election ballots, the BBC reported. The California judge ruled that the Department of Justice must stop demanding that officials set aside or not process certain ballots the Trump administration alleges may come from non-citizens. Judge Trina Thompson ordered a halt after civil rights groups and election-worker unions filed a complaint. The Justice Department had sought to set aside ballots of 20,000 registered California voters it called likely non-citizens, and DHS later threatened criminal charges if ballots were not sequestered.
