Taiwan to close Papua New Guinea office and halt LNG buys, blaming China
Briefing by News4U · First published
Taiwan said Friday it is closing its representative office in Papua New Guinea and will stop buying liquefied natural gas from the country, blaming Chinese political pressure. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Port Moresby had again demanded Taiwanese staff leave by a deadline and pushed for the office's closure, actions Taipei said reflect China's use of political pressure and economic influence to shrink Taiwan's international space. Taiwanese LNG purchases have accounted for about one-third of Papua New Guinea's exports, and Taipei said it will also end technical cooperation, medical missions and scholarships. [1]
