Pope Leo XIV holds first Uruguay mass, urges crowd to be bridge builders

Briefing by News4U · First published

Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first Mass in Uruguay on Saturday before more than 40,000 people in Paysandú's Parque París Londres, Al Jazeera and Euronews reported. The Vatican said about 30,000 people had registered and another 10,000 arrived despite rain, including visitors from Argentina and Brazil. In his homily the pontiff urged the crowd to be "bridge builders" and said, "Peace is possible and we are called to build it." The stop is part of a 12-day, three-nation South American tour that also includes Argentina and Peru, which had been in doubt after Leo's recent lung cancer surgery; he told reporters his recovery reflected trust in God, good doctors and a healthy lifestyle.
