Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate seat, first Muslim U.S. senator

Briefing by News4U · First published

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, a doctor and progressive former Wayne County health director, won Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, defeating Republican former congressman Mike Rogers to become the country’s first Muslim senator, The Guardian reported. El-Sayed, 42, declared victory early Wednesday at state Democrats’ headquarters in Detroit. He upset establishment favorite Haley Stevens in the primary and campaigned for Medicare for All and an end to U.S. military aid for Israel. The race was marked by Islamophobic attacks from President Donald Trump and Republican allies, including Trump calling him a “jihadist.” His win added to Democratic Senate gains that included shock victories in Texas, Kansas and South Carolina.
