Google turns off Search in schools that reject its AI features

Briefing by News4U · First published

Google is turning off Search for student accounts in schools that reject its AI features, the company told The New York Times, according to The Verge. A Tuesday education update said access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search "will be entirely off" unless administrators explicitly turn them on. Chris Phillips, Google's vice president of education, said Search and AI are deeply integrated and that schools disabling AI "will not have access to search." The Verge noted Classroom is used by more than 150 million teachers and students globally, and Google will test Guided Learning in AI Overviews at select U.S. schools this month. [1]
