Trump moves to remove South Africa and Rwanda from US AGOA trade deal

Briefing by News4U · First published

US President Donald Trump has notified Congress of his intention to remove South Africa and Rwanda from the African Growth and Opportunity Act preferential trade programme from 1 January 2027, the BBC reported. AGOA lets eligible African countries export thousands of products to the US duty-free. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said an annual review found both countries engaged in practices inconsistent with eligibility requirements. Washington cited barriers to US trade and investment and national security concerns; for Rwanda it also raised human rights issues, and for South Africa it pointed to corruption. The step follows US Treasury sanctions on Rwanda’s defence ministry over alleged M23 support in eastern DR Congo. [1]
