EU prosecutors probe Spain rail financing after crash that killed 69

Briefing by News4U · First published

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office said on Friday it is investigating possible fraud affecting EU funds for safety, signaling and communications upgrades on Spain’s Madrid-Seville high-speed railway, conducting measures at rail manager ADIF, safety agency AESF and the Court of Auditors. The probe follows the 2026-10-28 high-speed collision in Urda, Toledo, that killed at least 69 passengers and prompted Transport Minister Oscar Puente’s resignation; EPPO had already opened a related inquiry after a 2026-01 Adamuz crash killed 46 people.
