Costa Rica moved the first 123 inmates into CACCO. It has a capacity for 5,100 inmates and was built with Salvadoran help.
The Costa Rican Justice Ministry shared images on Tuesday of 123 inmates dressed in orange after they were transferred to the High-Containment Center Against Organized Crime (CACCO), Al Jazeera reported. [1]
Justice Minister Gabriel Aguilar said Costa Rica is writing a new chapter in its penitentiary history. It has a capacity for 5,100 inmates. The new facility has a capacity equivalent to 20 percent of the country’s prison population, at a cost of $35m, and was built with the help of the Salvadoran government on the outskirts of the capital, San Jose. Fernandez inaugurated it on October 15. [1]
Officials cast the facility as a tough response to organized crime. It witnessed a record-setting 905 homicides in 2023 after drug-linked violence rose. [1]
