Sutton: robots must learn online; Tashan/Openmind Robot Kindergarten keynote

Briefing by News4U · First published

Today Richard Sutton said on X that this Thursday he will give the opening keynote at RISEx 2026 in Edmonton on "The Tashan/Openmind Robot Kindergarten." He wrote that it has always been a dream to make robots that learn online by trial and error from their own experience, but that robotics learning is almost never online and has focused on data-sets from human demonstrations. Learning from experience, he said, needs anti-fragile robots, tactile skin, onboard computation, real-time learning algorithms, and scientific breakthroughs. Sutton said the Tashan/Openmind Robot Kindergarten is an ambitious new attempt led by researchers from Edmonton's Openmind Research Institute and Beijing's Tashan Technology Corporation, that the work has just begun, and that "Robots must learn online."
