Two police officers protecting polio workers shot dead in Pakistan
Briefing by News4U · First published
Gunmen travelling on a motorcycle opened fire on a police car in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, killing two officers protecting polio vaccination teams and injuring a third, Al Jazeera reported, citing police official Ali Rehman Khan. No polio staff were in the vehicle. The attack came a day after four officers escorting polio workers were kidnapped in the same province and remain missing. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari called the shooting extremely regrettable and said officers protecting polio teams are performing a national duty. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries where wild poliovirus remains endemic. [1]
