Venezuela's Machado thanks Trump, urges 2027 elections after return

Briefing by News4U · First published

Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado thanked US President Donald Trump, his administration and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Caracas on Thursday for opening what she called the floodgate to freedom through their January 3 action, Al Jazeera reported, citing AFP. In her first public remarks since returning from more than 10 months in exile, she said Rubio had outlined a democratic transition that makes clear presidential elections in 2027, and she criticised a US oil deal handing over 20 percent of Venezuela’s oil reserves as lacking transparency. Interim leader Delcy Rodriguez said elections would be held with the world as witness but gave no date. [1]
