China expels record 33 Communist Party members at fifth plenum amid Xi purges
Briefing by News4U · First published
China expelled a record 33 members from the Communist Party at this week's fifth plenum, The Guardian reported, citing empty seats as a marker of purges under Xi Jinping. Only 279 full and alternate Central Committee members attended, compared with 376 named in 2022, meaning more than 25% of the original cohort were absent. Confirmed expulsions included Zhang Youxia, formerly second in the military hierarchy, and Ma Xingrui, former Xinjiang party secretary. The gathering focused on party governance as Xi's anti-corruption drive has left only Xi and military anti-graft official Zhang Shengmin on the Central Military Commission. [1]
