Paraguay President Santiago Peña resigns after Ueno bank collapse

Briefing by News4U · First published

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña resigned Thursday after digital lender Ueno Bank collapsed, freezing millions of customers' accounts as lawmakers moved toward impeachment. BBC reported that Peña, a former shareholder in the bank's parent until last year, apologised in a video message and said he was resigning to protect stability, social peace and democratic institutions. Al Jazeera said Vice President Pedro Alliana is set to replace him after Peña lost backing within his conservative Colorado Party. Ueno served about three million customers, equivalent to about 60% of Paraguay's adult population, held roughly 00 million in public-sector deposits, and was seized by the central bank after its solvency ratio fell below half the required minimum.
