Global music body warns Australia against weakening copyright rules for AI companies

Briefing by News4U · First published

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry has warned Australia against weakening copyright protections for AI companies. IFPI chief executive Victoria Oakley told Guardian Australia the move would be "ridiculous and dangerous", because one safe harbour would let firms train on music from anywhere in the world. Labor is considering copyright changes in a wider AI policy review after AI companies asked for looser rules, and Anthropic suggested an opt-out model. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised "the strongest possible protection" and said it would be "theft" if creatives were not paid. Oakley said her members were telling other governments this would be "a disaster for creativity". [1]
