Google, Meta and TikTok sue California over child social media addiction law
Briefing by News4U · First published
Google, Meta and TikTok have sued California to block Assembly Bill 1709, a state law meant to limit the risk of addicting children under 16 to social media, The Guardian reported. The measure bans “psychologically exploitative features” such as personal recommendations and autoplay for underage users and requires deletion of children’s accounts that use those features. The companies argue the law violates First Amendment protections and Section 230, and substitutes state judgment for that of parents. Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office said Thursday it is reviewing the lawsuits and remains committed to defending California’s laws to protect kids online. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the law on 10 September; it takes effect on 1 January 2027 unless a judge voids or stays it. [1]
