Briefing by News4U · First published

The University of New Mexico canceled medicine, nursing and pharmacy classes for a second day after a Monday cybersecurity event at its Health Sciences Center disrupted hospital systems; clinics are returning while recovery continues in phases.

The University of New Mexico is canceling classes across its medicine, nursing and pharmacy faculties for a second day while recovering from a cybersecurity event that hit the Health Sciences Center, The Register reported. [1]

The university said the Monday attack forced it to shut down systems, cancel appointments and clinics at UNM Health hospitals, and divert ambulances to facilities in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. [1]

In a statement, UNM said the Health Sciences Center, including the UNM Health clinical delivery system, experienced a cybersecurity event on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026; IT teams moved to contain it, notified state and federal law enforcement, and leadership activated an Emergency Operations Center. [1]

Hospital appointments and clinics were returning to normal on Tuesday, though nonessential Health Sciences Center staff were asked to remain home. UNM has not described the attack's nature; a ransomware group calling itself BYOD claimed responsibility, which The Register noted is unverified. [1]
