Finnish court jails Russian captain over Baltic Sea cable sabotage

Briefing by News4U · First published

A Finnish court on Thursday jailed the Russian captain and a senior crew member of the freighter Fitburg for sabotaging two undersea cables linking Finland and Estonia, Euronews reported. The Helsinki District Court convicted them of aggravated criminal damage, sentencing the captain to three years and six months and the Azerbaijan national to two years and 10 months. The 132-metre St Vincent and the Grenadines-flagged cargo ship, sailing from St Petersburg toward Haifa, was detained on New Year’s Eve on suspicion that its anchor dragged along the seabed for several kilometres and damaged a telecoms cable in the Gulf of Finland owned by Finnish group Elisa in Estonia’s exclusive economic zone.
