Europe on alert after supermarket freezers hit by cyber-attacks in nine countries
Briefing by News4U · First published
A spate of cyber-attacks hit supermarket refrigeration systems across at least nine European countries on Monday, prompting European Union officials to warn of a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain, the BBC reported. Stores in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden reported freezer temperatures rising as high as 50C (122F), forcing retailers to discard food; no group has claimed responsibility. The incidents follow a cyber-attack about three weeks earlier that disrupted as many as 700 French grocery stores, with food losses estimated at tens of millions of euros. Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier said the incidents were not isolated and showed how cyber-attacks can disrupt essential services. [1]
