JD Vance letter may offer last chance to avert fresh US-Iran conflict

Briefing by News4U · First published

US Vice President JD Vance sent a personal letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's supreme national security council, offering to restart diplomacy after Qatari mediation, The Guardian reported Thursday. Sent on Sunday, the letter asks Tehran to make nuclear commitments at the start of a process that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days in return for US sanctions relief. A reply is imminent, but Iran is reluctant to give upfront irreversible nuclear commitments if US steps such as lifting oil-export sanctions are reversible. Negotiator Mohammad Ghalibaf wrote on X that progress depends on agreement on Iran's seven conditions. [1]
