UK CPS prosecutor cites imaginary court case after AI search

Briefing by News4U · First published

A senior Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor, Ravinder Dhillon, cited an imaginary legal precedent in a High Court dispute over whether a child who was 11 should be prosecuted for the alleged rape of his younger sister, court documents show. The Guardian understands the nonexistent citation came from an AI response generated during an internet search; two senior High Court judges called Dhillon's explanation unsatisfactory, and AI-and-law expert Brian Flanagan labelled using a nonexistent legal source a serious failure. The High Court said the fictitious reference did not affect the outcome of the boy's challenge, with a youth-court trial listed later this week. [1]
