Egypt reopens historic Tripoli embassy building during foreign minister's visit
Briefing by News4U · First published
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty inaugurated Egypt's historic embassy building in Tripoli on Saturday, a compound closed for 12 years after security concerns, including the 2014 kidnapping of five staff, according to Euronews. Egypt's diplomatic mission had resumed work in the city in May 2021. Abdelatty was joined by Libya's acting foreign minister, Taher al-Baour, and later met Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah of the internationally recognised Government of National Unity to discuss trade, energy projects and Egypt's objections to a 2019 Turkey-Libya maritime boundary deal. Al Jazeera reported that analysts see the visit as a shift after Cairo's long backing of eastern commander Khalifa Haftar. [1] [2]
