Canada and EU announce Alliance for the Future open to like-minded countries
Briefing by News4U · First published
Canada and the European Union announced a new Alliance for the Future on Friday in Montreal, with Prime Minister Mark Carney and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen calling it the deepest possible partnership between Canada and the 27-member EU. They said the alliance of like-minded nations would serve as a protective canopy for citizens and a hedge against unpredictable geopolitics, while welcoming other countries to join. Carney cited climate shocks, erosion of democratic norms and the weaponization of trade. Canada also agreed to contribute to a EUR 90bn support loan for Ukraine. [1]
