Briefing by News4U · First published

With 99 percent of the votes counted on Sunday from last week's municipal elections, President Cyril Ramaphosa's African National Congress had 31 percent nationally against 25 percent for the Democratic Alliance, a drop of roughly 14 percentage points from 2021, Al Jazeera reported, citing AFP and Reuters. Former President Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe party was third with about 10 percent. The ANC won no outright majority in any of the eight major metro areas; in Johannesburg the DA led with about 35 percent to the ANC's 20 percent. Parties have 14 days to negotiate before city councils are formed, and final results are expected at 6pm (16:00 GMT) on Sunday. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula on Saturday called the result "catastrophic." [1]
