Spanish transport minister Óscar Puente resigns after deadly train crash

Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente resigned on Tuesday after appearing in Congress to discuss last Wednesday’s high-speed train crash near Urda, south of Madrid, which killed at least 69 people and injured dozens. A state-operated Renfe high-speed train smashed into the back of a stationary Iryo train. Puente told lawmakers a transport minister in a country like Spain cannot remain in office after two accidents of this seriousness in less than a year, also referring to a deadly crash in January in Andalusia, and said he took the decision immediately after the 28 October disaster but waited several days before announcing it. DW English reported that Puente did not specify when he will leave his post. [1] [2]
