OpenAI says autonomous pipeline patched 948 Linux privilege-escalation bugs

Briefing by News4U · First published

Today OpenAI said on X that its security researchers built an autonomous cyber vulnerability discovery, exploitation, and patching pipeline that in a single run with an upcoming cyber model validated and generated patches for 948 local privilege-escalation vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel at a total API cost of $1.2 million. OpenAI said the run reproduced 1,724 vulnerabilities, produced proofs of concept for 291 information leaks and working exploits for those 948 privilege-escalation bugs on a stock Linux desktop with standard protections, cost $1,213,430 in API credits (about $1,279 per distinct bug), and used at least 10 Linux exploitation techniques the company and consulted experts regard as novel, while human researchers review results before reporting patches to maintainers.
