Noyb files GDPR complaints against Scale AI over Outlier worker tracking

European privacy group noyb filed five GDPR complaints in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria alleging Scale AI unlawfully monitors contractors on its Outlier data-annotation platform; Scale called the claims unfounded.

Privacy campaigner noyb has filed five GDPR complaints in four European Union countries against US data-annotation company Scale AI, alleging it unlawfully monitors European contractors on its Outlier platform, The Register reported on Tuesday. [1]

Noyb says Outlier workers label data and evaluate AI outputs for customers including OpenAI, xAI, Anthropic, Google and the US government, and that identity checks via Persona collect biometrics plus IP addresses, device, geolocation, address and credit data. [1]

The complaints, lodged in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria, also accuse Scale of capturing system and device activity—including outside Outlier work—and sending it to third parties such as LinkedIn, TikTok and Facebook as often as every few seconds, and of ignoring data-access requests. [1]

Scale told The Register the report’s claims are unfounded and inaccurate, saying Outlier practices are disclosed and require consent and that it uses standard tools to verify identities, prevent fraud, protect confidential project information and ensure accurate payment. [1]
