U.S. homelessness fell more than 6% in 2025, or roughly 49,000 fewer people without housing, according to an annual community count announced by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and reported by NPR. It was the second straight yearly decline after record highs, following a smaller drop in 2024. HUD Secretary Scott Turner credited Trump administration border and public-safety policies for a historic decrease, though HUD had not yet posted a detailed report. An independent analysis commissioned by the National Alliance to End Homelessness found a similar decline, crediting programs funded by Congress. Both analyses said nearly 700,000 people remain in shelters or on the streets. [1]
