Earthshot prize to use Reliance-owned Mumbai venue, drawing conservationist criticism
Briefing by News4U · First published
The Prince of Wales's Earthshot prize will hold this year's awards at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on 17 November, a spokesperson confirmed to The Guardian. The venue is part of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, which also owns Jamnagar, called the world's biggest oil refinery. Conservationist Megan Carr warned that using the site "could lend an unearned environmental prestige to a corporate group currently under question by the global conservation community," pointing to the group's fossil-fuel businesses and the 400-hectare Vantara zoo founded by Ambani's son Anant. Earthshot's Joanna Swift said the prize was paying the standard commercial rate and had not sought a philanthropic partnership. [1]
