Trump waives Russia sanctions days before they take effect

Briefing by News4U · First published

Trump paused sanctions on Russia, citing peace talks. The move drew bipartisan criticism and prompted Zelenskyy to warn it would strengthen Moscow.

President Trump signed an executive order on Friday waiving sanctions, restrictions and tariffs on Russia that Congress passed last month and that were due to start on 18 October. He said the pause was in the US national interest and necessary to keep Moscow at the negotiating table. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

The legislation, named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, would have sanctioned Russian officials, banks and a shadow fleet, and allowed tariffs of up to 100% on the top five importers of Russian oil or gas. Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev called the waiver "historic"; Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said it would send cash back to Russia. [1] [2] [3]
