Amnesty: Cambodian police and soldiers guarded scam compounds

Briefing by News4U · First published

Amnesty International says Cambodian police and soldiers worked as guards at scam compounds, using violence to trap victims.

The Guardian reported that Amnesty International alleges Cambodian police and soldiers worked as private security guards at scam compounds where thousands were forced into online fraud, administering electric shocks and beatings. [1]

Based on 151 survivor interviews and visits to 82 compounds, Amnesty linked operations to five security companies, including Leap Somnang, believed to be connected to a military colonel. [1]

Cambodian authorities responded that they had disciplined 77 police officers, prosecuted six guards for illegal stun baton use, and detained 17 officials for collusion with criminals. [1]
