EU steel tariffs hit Ukraine exports, China growth beats forecasts

Briefing by News4U · First published

Ukraine steel chief urges EU to lift tariffs imposed to curb Chinese imports; China’s Q3 GDP rose 4.5%.

The EU capped duty-free steel imports at 18.3 million tonnes a year, a 47% cut from 2024, to shield producers from cheap Chinese and Turkish steel. Metinvest CEO Yuriy Ryzhenkov said Ukraine was “bundled together” unfairly and warned exports to the EU could fall 50–60%. [1]

The European Commission said Ukraine’s quota was lower than in past years but still guaranteed exports and that it had offered compensations. Ryzhenkov said access to the EU market is “crucial for survival” amid intensified Russian strikes on mills. [1]

Separately, China’s GDP grew 4.5% year-on-year in the third quarter, beating forecasts, driven by industrial output up 5.5% in September, while retail sales rose only 1.1%. [2]
