Trump pauses Russia sanctions, cites peace talks; oil prices slip

Briefing by News4U · First published

Trump waived new sanctions on Russia two days before they took effect, saying he wants to keep Moscow at the negotiating table. Oil prices fell after the move.

President Trump signed an executive order on Friday waiving sanctions and tariffs mandated by the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which Congress passed last month and he signed into law. The measures were due to start on 18 October. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Trump said the pause keeps Russia at the bargaining table and accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of not wanting to end the war. Zelenskyy warned that waiving sanctions would strengthen Russia and called any US shift toward Moscow a historic mistake. [2] [3] [4] [5]
