Albanese government warned of another robodebt over AI and algorithms

Briefing by News4U · First published

The Guardian reports that the Centre for Public Integrity has warned the Albanese government is “sleepwalking into another robodebt” because of insufficient transparency and legislation governing automated decision-making (ADM) and AI. The centre’s “Computer Says No” report calls for a mandatory audit, a public register of all ADM tools, and an independent oversight body. It highlights the government’s integrated assessment tool (IAT) used in aged care, which a Commonwealth Ombudsman report found routinely under-assesses needs and cannot be overridden by assessors. Attorney-General Michelle Rowland said the government is developing an ADM framework to implement robodebt royal commission recommendations, but did not give a timeline. [1]
