A federal judge ruled that Bill Essayli is not legally serving as US attorney in Los Angeles and disqualified him from two prosecutions; the order is stayed pending appeal.

The Guardian reported that a federal judge ruled Republican Bill Essayli is not legally serving as the top US prosecutor in Los Angeles and disqualified him from overseeing two criminal prosecutions. [1]

Essayli became interim US attorney in April 2025 without Senate confirmation; after his interim term ended, the Trump administration gave him an “acting” title and later a “first assistant” designation, which the judge also found unlawful. [1]

Judge Michael Seabright’s order will not take effect immediately; the Department of Justice said it intends to appeal, and Essayli stated he respectfully disagrees with the ruling. [1]
