FBI blames North Korea for record $6 billion Binance hack; exchange covers 90% of losses
Briefing by News4U · First published
The FBI said North Korea's TraderTraitor group stole more than $6 billion in bitcoin, ethereum and stablecoins from Binance on or about October 29, calling it the biggest cryptocurrency heist in history. The agency linked the theft to the same actors behind last year's $1.5 billion Bybit hack and urged crypto exchanges and DeFi services to block hundreds of listed addresses. Binance said it used company funds worth over $6.34 billion to replace about 90% of the stolen assets, with the remaining 10% consisting of less liquid tokens that may take longer to buy back; co-CEO Richard Teng said users will not bear the financial impact.
