US food importer sues Trump over 50% Canadian tariffs
Briefing by News4U · First published
Gellert Global Group challenges 50% tariffs on Canadian cheese, arguing the White House exceeded authority under a 1930 law.
A New Jersey food importer, Gellert Global Group, sued President Trump on Tuesday in the US Court of International Trade, seeking to block 50% tariffs on about $20bn of Canadian goods and to obtain refunds with interest. [1] [2]
The Liberty Justice Center, filing on Gellert’s behalf, argues the administration improperly invoked Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act, bypassed a required 30-day waiting period and ignored newer congressional limits. [1] [2]
Gellert says it has already paid more than $520,000 in duties and faces retaliatory Canadian tariffs on its US-made cheese exports. [2]
