Novaya Gazeta to close Nov 9 after Russian authorities force shutdown
Briefing by News4U · First published
Novaya Gazeta announced it will cease operations on 9 November, with editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov stating that Russian authorities and special services forced the closure after 30 years. Sokolov was recently questioned and his home searched in connection with a criminal case against colleague Oleg Roldugin, arrested in April and charged with unlawful access to computerised information; Roldugin remains under house arrest until 10 November. The outlet, labelled a foreign agent, had already reduced operations inside Russia and lost its media licence after the 2022 Ukraine offensive. [1] [2]
