Brazilians vote Sunday in a presidential runoff between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, seeking a fourth term, and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, 45. Nearly 160 million citizens are eligible; polls open at 8am and close at 5pm local time. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Flavio Bolsonaro led the first round by more than 2.2 million votes, but recent polls show Lula closing the gap. Lula campaigns on social policies; Bolsonaro pledges tougher crime measures and to free his father, under house arrest for a 2022 coup attempt. [3]
The campaign has featured corruption scandals, economic difficulties and allegations of US interference, which Washington denies. Preliminary results are expected Sunday night. [3] [4]
