US, Russia veto rival Western Sahara peacekeeping resolutions, mission expires

Briefing by News4U · First published

DW English reported that the UN Security Council could not agree on extending the MINURSO peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara, which expires on October 31, after the United States and Russia vetoed each other's draft resolutions. The US draft, which would have made Morocco's autonomy plan the sole basis for negotiations and renamed the mission MINUSO, was vetoed by Russia; the US then vetoed Russia's draft that sought to renew the mandate under existing terms. Morocco welcomed the outcome, while the Polisario Front thanked Russia for blocking the US proposal. [1]
