Japan seeks US help to ease China yttrium export curbs as supplies near exhaustion

Briefing by News4U · First published

Japan warns its yttrium stocks will last only months and has asked Washington to press Beijing to relax rare-earth export controls affecting autos, defense and chips.

Japan has told the US government and major American firms that its yttrium supplies will last only months and has asked Washington to urge China to ease rare-earth export controls, citing risks to global auto, defense and semiconductor industries. [1] [2]

US and Japanese officials have held several talks, including a September meeting that created a critical-minerals rapid-response team. Washington says Beijing has met only two-thirds of its rare-earth pledges to the US and has limited shipments to Japan to minimum needs. [2]

Outside China, the price of yttrium oxide has risen to $1,150 per kg, 179 times the level two years ago, while the domestic Chinese price remains $9 per kg. [2]
