Binance hit by record $6.3bn crypto heist, North Korea-linked hackers blamed
Briefing by News4U · First published
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, said hackers stole about $6.3 billion in the biggest crypto heist on record, draining funds across 10 blockchains in roughly 20 minutes on Thursday. Blockchain intelligence firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis attributed the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit linked to the Lazarus Group. About $3 billion of the stolen assets have been frozen with help from blockchain partners, while Binance said it has set aside more than $6.34 billion in company funds, including $5 billion in matching tokens, to cover all losses.
