Israeli president tasks Gadi Eisenkot with forming new government
Briefing by News4U · First published
Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Saturday tasked opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot with forming a government after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist coalition lost its majority in the Oct. 27 election. Eisenkot, whose four-party bloc holds 48 seats, has 28 days and may request a 14-day extension. Factions representing 67 Knesset seats endorsed him, while Netanyahu’s camp has 53 seats. Netanyahu called for a national-unity government; Eisenkot rejected the proposal and vowed to form an emergency government. [1] [2] [3] [4]
