Paraguay Senate ousts President Santiago Pena over Ueno bank collapse
Briefing by News4U · First published
Paraguay’s Senate impeached and removed President Santiago Pena over the collapse of digital lender Ueno, freezing millions of customer accounts and public pension and health-care funds; he resigned Thursday but was impeached instead of accepting the resignation, losing lifetime Senate immunity, and was placed under house arrest alongside former central bank chief Carlos Carvallo. Vice President Pedro Alliana will serve the rest of the term ending August 2028. Prosecutors charged 27 bank officials and associates; eight senior executives, including founder Miguel Vazquez, were detained. Ueno served 2.94 million customers and held $800 million in public deposits. [1] [2]
