China begins building commercial high-temperature gas-cooled reactor at Jiangsu Xuwei plant

On 6 November, construction of the “Chilong-1” high-temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear island at Jiangsu Xuwei Nuclear Heating Power Plant began, marking the commercial rollout of China’s Generation-IV nuclear technology. The reactor uses helium coolant and spherical fuel elements that can withstand 1620 °C, providing inherent safety and enabling both power generation and high-temperature industrial steam supply.
