ITHome reports first Chinese BCI system restores finger dexterity in hemiplegic patient

Briefing by News4U · First published

Wuhan Union Hospital and Beiming Medical unveiled the first domestic high-channel matrix stimulation BCI system, enabling a hemiplegic patient to play piano pieces after two months of training.

ITHome reported that on 12 October 2026 Wuhan Union Hospital announced Professor Jiang Xiaobing’s team, working with Shandong Beiming Medical, has developed China’s first “high-channel matrix stimulation brain-computer interface fine-movement reconstruction system,” allowing a hemiplegic patient to play piano pieces after nearly two months of training. [1]

The system independently controls each stimulation point to activate dozens of small forearm muscle groups, enabling single-finger flexion-extension, multi-finger coordination and thumb-to-finger pinch. The patient’s hand tremor decreased markedly and finger dexterity and strength improved significantly, permitting fluent electronic-piano playing and writing. [1]
